Our History
The predecessor of American Hellenic Congress was the Justice for Cyprus Committee which was established in 1964 after Turkey bombarded Cyprus.
The ambassador of Cyprus to the USA at the time, Zenon Rossides, visited Detroit to unite Greeks in support of Cyprus.
He, together, with our Cypriot brothers in Michigan formed the Justice for Cyprus Committee, with a mission to raise awareness and seek political support.
As discussions progressed it became clear that all Hellenism was under threat, and this was a concern for all Greeks.
So even though, as things came down, the Committee became inactive, several of the members decided that a permanent organization was necessary if this important work was to continue efficiently and on a timely basis.
The American Hellenic Congress (AHC) was established.
When Turkey invaded Cyprus in 1974 this group met the next day and decided to act.
The leaders of all the Greek organizations with one voice agreed to join the newly formed organization as sponsors. It was decided that the AHC would take the lead in representing all organizations regarding this issue.
The unified group represented by AHC had notable successes in Washington.
